Staying Involved

Thank You!

We would like to thank all the parents who have given of their time and financial support to our school by helping the PTSA. We have been able to make a difference in many ways.
For example:
• Purchased parts for the Middle school telescope.
• Funded a portion of the genetics field trip for the IB biology class.
• Gave start-up funds for the “Who cares club” which is a composting/gardening initiative.
• Co-sponsored public speakers for the student council.
• Helped sponsor the middle school graduation video production.
• Gave a number of end-of year awards to deserving students.

As you can see, by helping the PTSA you are helping our children and school. If you are already a member or help out at our event, we thank you for your continued support. If you have not yet joined the PTSA please consider the benifits.

Opinion

Why Shop Local?
By: Anonymous contributor

It’s true, we all do it. We naturally look for the best deals. If there are two gas stations sitting next to each other, generally we choose the one with the lowest price (unless the higher priced one has better coffee). With an ailing economy in the mix, all of us have become bargain hunters. But what is a “good bargain”? Does it come down to the amount of money left in our wallets at the end of the day? Of course we know things aren’t that simple, after all a fresh cup of java will take us to a higher priced station. So what is important to us when deciding where to shop? Do relationships matter? If your good friend owned a bagel shop would we consider getting bagels somewhere else? It certainly would make it difficult to look our friend in the eyes again. Our Red Hook community has built great relationships with our local merchants. For example, when I joined the PTA this year (my daughter is in 5th grade) I took my membership card down to the Montgomery Place Orchards stand and picked up a free bag of apples donated by them. I personally consider them a friend to our community, so when I need apples or other produce I think of them. On Friday night when my family sends me out for pizza, I head straight for the place that consistently gives so much support to our local schools, Village Pizza. There are many other examples of such friendships, too many to mention in this little space, but the point is the same. One of the reasons we support our local merchants is because they support us.
